Peter composed Music, When Soft Voices Die for the Newtown Middle School in Bucks County, PA. The music teacher there, Mark Dolan, combined his young men’s group with the young women’s group to create a larger SATB ensemble for the premiere.  Peter wanted to compose something that would be in memory of the people who tragically lost their lives in Newtown, Connecticut. According to the composer, the textless section was representative of sorrow too deep for words.

Text

Music, when soft voices die,

Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the belovèd’s bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

— Percy Bysshe Shelley, (1792-1822)
