The Lord is My Shepherd was composed while Peter was working at Morrisville Presbyterian Church. The piece is dedicated to a longtime member at Morrisville, Marie Elmer, who passed away in 2009. After the funeral, Peter composed his setting of the 23rd Psalm and informed Marie’s family that the piece was for her. Marie’s family members were present at the premiere of the piece, conducted by the composer with Marilyn Shenenberger at the piano.

The Lord is my shepherd.
I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside still waters
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of darkness,
I will fear no evil.
For thou art with me thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

The Lord is my shepherd.
I shall not want.
Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
Thou annointest my head with oil
my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my life.
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
