A lovely solo or unison choir setting of a section of San Juan de la Cruz’s Romance 9.
Here is a poetic translation of the original Spanish:
Men sang their songs,
angels their melodies,
celebrating the union
that had come to be between them.
But God, in the manger,
wept and groaned
for these were the jewels
the Bride brought to the marriage.
And the Mother stood in awe
at the exchange she beheld:
the tears of man in God,
and in man, the joy
things so strange,
so foreign to each other until now.
