In addition to his choral works, Doug Brandt has written many pieces for the stage, including Listen, Little Great Owl (music, book, and lyrics), which explores the Native American genocide in Colonial America; Disordered (music, book, and lyrics),a musical comedy about three women with eating disorders; a workshop production of The Glass Menagerie (music—text by Tennessee Williams) at the New York Theatre Workshop, conceived and directed by Tony nominee Liesl Tommy; and a sung-through musical/lyrical theater piece, Herculine Barbin (music and libretto), which tells the story of a 19th century French intersex person who was raised as a girl but forced as an adult to live as a man. For Paul, for men’s chorus, placed third in the American Prize—Major Choral Works division; he is also a two-time finalist for the American Prize for other choral works, and four works appear in the Craig Hella Johnson Choral Series with G. Schirmer. His first band piece, Eye of the Bog, was commissioned by the Windy City Winds in Chicago and premiered in 2024. Doug holds two music degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and an MFA in theater from Trinity Rep Conservatory. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Kathy Keegan, and their seven-year-old cat and 24-year-old blue tongue skink.
